Synagogues in India

There are currently thirty-three synagogues in India, although many no longer function as such and today vary in their levels of preservation. These buildings dating from the mid-sixteenth through the mid-20th century once served the country’s three distinct Jewish groups – the ancient Cochin Jews and Bene Israel communities as well as the more recent Baghdadi Jews.

9. Alibag Konkan region: Alibag is a small town located 19 miles from Bombay. Here the Magen Aboth Synagogue was constructed in 1848. Many jews owned in this town, plots of land used for farming, rasing livestock, etc. Later many of these jews shifted to Bombay during the British period.
