Sadia Shepard, an American writer, and filmmaker traveled to India in search of her ancestry and to better understand her history, which is a blend of Protestant, Jewish, and Islamic cultures. She left with 18 diaries full of memories that she compiled into a book.
The Girl from Foreign: A Search for Shipwrecked Ancestors, Forgotten Histories, and a Sense of Home follows Shepard’s grandmother’s Jewish ancestry as a member of Mumbai’s small Bene Israel group, as well as her extraordinary love story and secret marriage to a Muslim from Pakistan.
It was presented at the American Centre in New Delhi by the American Centre, Penguin Books India, and the United States-India Educational Foundation.
