Amid pandemic misery, India’s Jews try to stay safe while helping neighbors

Nissim Pingle, the director of Mumbai’s Jewish community center, hasn’t left his home since March, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

COVID-19 began to surpass India at that point. The second wave of diseases has wreaked havoc on the country’s health system, with at least 4,000 people dying every day. As stories of people succumbing to the sickness due to a lack of oxygen or hospital beds mount, the country is on track to have the world’s greatest death toll by far.

The approximately 7,000 Jews in India, the majority of whom live in Mumbai, are a privileged minority with the wherewithal to self-isolate. However, even within society, India’s well-known multigenerational houses have raised concerns about the virus’s spread.
