Corona clouds Jewish New Year fete

Because of the ban on the entry of community members into synagogues and limitations on congregations in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jewish community in India is gearing up for low-key Jewish New Year celebrations and associated festivals.

The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, begins on Friday evening and ends on Sunday evening. A month of festivals and ceremonies will accompany it. The sudden imposition of Section 144 in Mumbai from midnight on Thursday to control the COVID-19 spread has added to the dampened mood of the city.

This will be the first time we will not be willing, as normal, to perform religious rituals. Community members are sad because they are deprived of going to the synagogue, but because people’s protection decisions have been made by the government, we should not complain,’ said Samuel Elijah Daniel Bamnolkar, president of Shaar Hashamaim Synagogue, Thane.
