How India Has Moved With Israel: A Timetable of Milestone Events

May 17, 2021, Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti, India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, declared India’s formal response to the latest round of Israeli violence against Palestinians in East Jerusalem, Gaza, and the West Bank.

While the “indiscriminate rocket firings from Gaza” were condemned, Israel’s air attacks were not mentioned. India has been careful not to mention East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state since Trump’s policy shift in 2017, as evidenced by this UN statement, even as it declares its support for a two-state solution as if Israeli behavior hasn’t effectively destroyed this possibility in any meaningful sense.

Our Indian or Indian-origin ‘Advisors to the Prince,’ i.e., a group of prominent journalists and academics (whether in India or at universities in Singapore, the United Kingdom, or the United States), rationalize this shameful pro-Israeli stance as a more or less ‘balanced’ position protecting Indian ‘national interests.’ Only the Left parties have dared to demand halting India’s military relationship with Israel — Israel is India’s second-biggest supplier after Russia, and India is its largest purchaser – and for backing the BDS campaign against the Israeli government and related institutions.
