In Pictures: Indian Jewish tribe heads ‘home’

Members of the Bnei Menashe tribe, who have been recognized by Israel as descendants of vanished tribes, are planning a reunion with their ancestors.

After a visa prohibition was overturned, a “lost” Jewish tribe in India waits expectantly for a journey to Israel.

In India’s northeastern provinces of Mizoram and Manipur, the Bnei Menashe (sons of Menasseh) reside. They were recognized as descendants of the “Ten Lost Tribes of Israel” banished by the Assyrians in the eighth century BC by Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar in 2005.

Shavei Israel, a non-profit organization dedicated to reuniting “lost and hidden Jews” with the people and state of Israel, is supporting and sponsoring their emigration to Israel. The organization also supports the return of Bnei Anousim from Spain, Portugal, and South America, as well as Poland’s hidden Jews.
