In Pictures: Indian Jews keep heritage alive

The Jewish community in Mumbai clings to centuries of tradition, but their numbers are rapidly shrinking.

India’s Mumbai – Although it was once a sizable community, India’s Jewish population has shrunk dramatically, leaving only a small minority who are fighting to preserve their traditions alive.

More than 2,000 years ago, the first Jews arrived in India and lived in the southern state of Kerala. The Bene Israelis arrived 600 years later, while Baghdadi Jews immigrated in 1730, some fleeing religious persecution in the Arab world.

Around 33,000 Israelis departed after the establishment of Israel in 1948, leaving only 5,000 Jews in India today. The majority are Bene Israelis, with most of them residing in Mumbai. Around 100 Baghdadi Jews also live in the city.
