This book explores the contributions of both foreign and Indian Jews to India’s national art project, posing questions such as: Does the title “Indian artist” apply to any artist born into an Indian family? What role may foreigners and members of Indian minority groups have as researchers, critics, or artists in the Indian National Art Project? Is a piece of art considered “Indian art” because of its subject or style? Is it possible to create “Indian art” using “foreign techniques”? The Jews and Indian National Art Project features painters such as Anna Molka Ahmed, Mirra Alfassa (The Mother), Siona Benjamin, Carmel Berkson, and Fredda Brilliant, as well as photographers (David Mordecai and Man Ray) and architects (Otto Königsberger and Moshe Safdie). The work of critics, academicians, and art patrons such as Ernst Cohn-Wiener, Charles Fabri, Stella Kramrisch, and Marion Harry Spielmann is also included in this volume.
