In a yard sale in Salford, a rare Jewish text published for the “Black Jews of India” in the 19th century was uncovered.
Dr. Yaakov Wise of the University of Manchester discovered the 137-year-old Poona Haggadah, which was used by the Bene Israel community during Passover.
After recognizing it at the auction, he said he paid a “substantial” sum.
He explained, “I knew it was an extremely rare book it might be the only copy in Britain.”
He was a frequent at second-hand book sales as far away as Hay-on-Wye in Powys, according to the Prestwich-based historian.
He said he found the Haggadah in a stack of books at a local sale in Salford’s Higher Broughton district, which had text in both Hebrew and Marathi, an Indian language.
