When it comes to Jewishness – and the right to return to Israel – constructed identities are especially important.

Esther David (whose actual surname was Dandekar) describes attempting to “make aliyah” via the Law of Return, which allows Jewish people from all around the world to come to Israel.

She was “running away from India” and her Bene Israeli group, which holds to the belief that they are descended from 14 Jewish men and women who were shipwrecked on the Konkan coast over 2,000 years ago.
