Watching ‘Old Jews Telling Jokes’ With Anjan Biswas

Every week in Curtain Raisers, we invite a local theater artist to attend and discuss a show of his or her choice. Anjan Biswas, a comedian, recently went to the Westside Theatre to witness Peter Gethers and Daniel Okrent’s “Old Jews Telling Jokes,” directed by Marc Bruni. Mr. Biswas’ new show “What’s an Anjan?” will premiere in the United States on Friday as part of the New York International Fringe Festival at Jimmy’s No. 43.

It’s customary in certain families to make jokes about sex, death, and other body processes. Mr. Biswas, who was reared by Christian Baptists and is Indian, is not a member of one. “My folks are utterly deafeningly deafeningly deafeningly deafeningly deafen “If someone farted, we would act as if nothing had happened.”

This doesn’t mean the 23-year-old comedian felt out of place at “Old Jews Telling Jokes,” a fast-paced, 80-minute show whose Saturday-afternoon matinee audience was mostly made up of Jewish seniors having a good time. Five actors conduct monologues and sketches on stage that are divided into thematic themes such as birth, death, assimilation, money, and sex before and after marriage.
