This week, we meet Shobha (“Fori”) Nehru, an aristocratic Indian woman who is married to BK Nehru, a former Indian ambassador to the United States and nephew of India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. She was born and raised a Hungarian Jew, despite being a member of the Indian nobility. Learn how she met Martin Gilbert, a young British student who went on to become a world-renowned historian, and how their friendship grew over time, eventually leading her to question him about her history, the history of the Jews. Gilbert ended up sending her letters, which were later published as Letters to Auntie Fori: The 5,000-Year History of the Jewish People and Their Faith, a book on Jewish history.
