Despite the conclusion of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Team India is only just getting started.
Known informally as the “Team India,” a five-member team of young Jewish adults from India just returned from a JDC/Ronald S Lauder Szarvas program where they learned about social entrepreneurship. About a thousand children from the United States, Israel, India, Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and other parts of the world attended Szarvas, an international Jewish summer camp located in Hungary, for two weeks this summer. Many of the young people who are a part of Szarvas, and who do the many leadership and development activities in addition to learning more about their heritage, go on to become the next generation of leaders in their hometowns.
This small population of young Indian Jews uses all of the Jewish education, camping, social activities, and holidays that are offered at the EPJCC, which hosts nearly 4,500 Jews today. Furthermore, they have access to various leadership training programs that have been historically successful in helping families keep their legacies alive. Among the 2,000-year-old Jews of India, two distinct communities can be found in Mumbai and Thane, but the Jews of other locations are scattered in various parts of the country, particularly in Pune, Gujarat (Ahmedabad), Kerala (Cochin), Delhi, Kolkata, and the Konkan region. In addition to numerous synagogues, the Indian Jews – who are mostly Bene Israel, Baghdadi, and Cochini Jews – form close-knit communities around a variety of Jewish facilities.
