Meet Siona Benjamin: Transcultural, India-Jewish Artist

As a Jewish artist who grew up in India and has since moved to the United States, I focus on my work in cross-cultural and transcultural art. I help you bridge the gap between modern and traditional by giving you the platform to communicate with others across cultures.

After the split, some family members, like my parents, stayed in India, whereas others, like me, moved to Israel and America. In my memories, Bombay (Mumbai) has these gorgeous synagogues: Elijah’s chair, the soft coverings, and gleaming metal, the oil lamps. Growing up in a Hindu-Muslim culture and receiving an education in Catholic, Zoroastrian, and Jewish schools, I’ve had to reflect on cultural boundary zones for the entirety of my life.

My views transcend Judaism and are pan-cultural and multiethnic. I synthesize my former role in different cultures and the image of where I stand today into an artwork inspired by illuminated manuscripts and multicultural mythology.
