Singing the songs of ancient Indian Jews

It had been a long time since anyone could understand the songs performed by the Nirit Singers of Israel, as the music was in an ancient language not spoken today. But people who witnessed their performance found themselves clapping along to the rhythm anyway.

The panel of experts on folk songs was made up of Nirit Singers who were speaking about and discussing the folk songs of the Cochini Jews in the Stamp Student Union on Sunday. The Cochini Jews lived in India for 2,000 years before migrating to Israel in the 1950s.

A panel of experts brought fresh insight to a topic that has experienced a surprising uptick in interest and was due to the higher levels of cooperation between scholars and performers, an unusual occurrence in the world of academia.
