Mumbai’s rich Jewish history found in its many synagogues

With only a few thousand Jews left in India, it’s hard to believe that the country still has about 60 synagogues that are either still standing or have been in the past. Many are closed, but there are still a lot of places to go. Most of the time, people who go on vacation will need to hire a driver and/or a guide. You can see a few Bene Israel and Baghdadi temples in Mumbai, which was once known as “Bombay.” Each place shows a different part of Indian Jewish culture and history.

The Bene Israel, the Cochin Jews, and the Baghdadis are the three main groups of Indian Jews. Most of the people who live in Bene Israel are from that country. For a long time, they lived in a city on the west coast of India. Over time, some of them moved to other places. Few Cochin Jews still live in Kochi (formerly Cochin). Iraqi Jews are mostly found in Mumbai and Kolkata (formerly Calcutta).
