Baghdadi Jews in India were able to keep their communities alive by juggling various identities in a stratified and complicated culture. During the British Raj, the communities were immensely diverse, and they were able to successfully adjust to new surroundings while keeping certain traditions and changing and assimilating others. From the late 18th century until their dispersal to various Indian diasporas in Israel and English-speaking countries around the world following India’s independence in 1947, they underwent incredible transformations. Prof. Shalva Weil, Senior Researcher at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Seymour Fox School of Education, will lead a study of their stories that span countries and decades.
